3 steps to freedom in your marketing and sales
You want to land high-paying, strategic work that pays well.
But this can feel impossible when you’re in a boom or bust cycle.
When business booms, it’s because you’re delivering tedious, hands-on work that requires a lot of effort and time with clients who aren’t a great fit. You got here by saying “yes” to anyone and everyone.
And when business is a bust, you’re struggling to find new clients and gigs. It feels scary and uncertain.
Either way it’s exhausting.
To consistently land high-paying gigs in your zone of genius, you need to SIMPLIFY your marketing and sales.
The best gigs usually go to the consultant who can cut through the noise the quickest and deliver the fastest results.
How you market and sell is how you’ll deliver. That’s why I always keep it simple.
Here’s the approach I’ve used for 7+ years to land and sell millions of dollars of work:
When clients ask me about my process or what I do, I tell them in the most basic terms that it all boils down to 3 simple steps: Discover -> Propose -> Deliver
I discover clients needs – usually through a discovery call or consultation
I draft a custom proposal for them, tailored to their unique needs / situation
I deliver at the highest quality of excellence based on 15+ years as a business strategist and coach
I do this whether I’m selling $300,000 consulting engagements to a Fortune 100 corporation or a $2400 program to an independent consultant in Akron, Ohio.
I don’t go into elaborate explanations of my methodology (though I absolutely could)
I don’t list out all of my credentials and try to prove my worth.
I don’t say “yes” to every request clients make.
I slice through all the complexity and keep it simple, EVERY. SINGLE. TIME.
There are so many reasons why this works:
Clarity - Clients crave clarity. So you need to deliver it from the first conversation until the final project readout.
Speed - When you have a simple process that doesn’t change, you get SO GOOD at moving quickly through the steps and taking others along for the journey.
Results - With a streamlined process, you can focus on what actually matters – delivering results for your clients.
All of this requires a certain skillset as a consultant or coach:
Authority - standing in your own ability and expertise. No waffling.
Restraint - refraining from doing and saying everything that comes to mind
Boundaries - being willing to say “no,” in service of delivering great results
Care - giving a shit about your clients and what will ACTUALLY help them
When you pull all of this together, you’ll land high paying gigs.
You’ll be viewed as “the best of the best”
People will reach out, intrigued by how you’re doing what you’re doing.
You’ll have time available in your schedule to do deep thinking.
You’ll get better and better at serving your clients with less of your time required.
And the better you get, the more successful you’ll become.
It’s a virtuous cycle.
