How to get noticed by hiring managers

If you’re applying to jobs online, you probably know that having a great resume and LinkedIn profile only gets you so far.

You likely already know all of the resume “tips and tricks” out there:

  • Write a compelling headline

  • Include lots of white space

  • Showcase relevant experience

The list goes on…

You’re also probably applying for jobs in all the right places:

  • LinkedIn

  • Indeed

  • Job boards

But even if you’re doing all of this 100% correctly, it’s unlikely that you’re going to stand out amongst the competition.

You might think it’s because you don’t know how to get past the online screeners – or that you’re being overlooked because of discrimination.

While discrimination is a real thing, it’s still probably not the reason you aren’t getting traction.

For every posting, recruiters are receiving 400+ applications.

They are overwhelmed.

Everyone’s resume looks exactly the same – especially now that there are AI tools to help you craft the perfect bullet points.

The reality is that you need to be an incredible networker to land a job in this market.

Most people I talk to hate networking.

  • They hate talking about themselves

  • They don’t want to seem fake

  • They feel like more of an introvert

  • They don’t know a lot of people

But here’s the thing. Networking is only painful if you think you have to go out and put on a little dog and pony show for people – which you absolutely should not do!

The best networking is about meeting people, asking questions about them, and then uncovering opportunities in the process.

The process is simple: meet people -> ask them questions -> find interviews

You don’t need the perfect elevator pitch or fancy business cards.

You just need to be curious and humble.

Go out and learn about people and the market.

Ask tons of questions.

When you do this, you’ll have nice conversations with people.

They’ll give you great information.

You’ll start to think more creatively about your next steps.

New career paths will open.

You’ll get better at talking about yourself in an authentic way.

You’ll skip to the front of the line for interviews.

And then when you’re sitting across from a hiring manager, you’ll be great at speaking to them because you’ve practiced so much.

Up to 70% of jobs are never posted online.

How do you find them? By following the process above: meet people -> ask them questions -> find interviews.

It’s that simple, and it always works.
