Small steps that lead to big results

People usually reach out to me when they’ve reached peak frustration. 

They’re in full-on “over it” mode. 

They’re feeling disrespected, under-valued, under-paid, and micromanaged at work. 

When you’re feeling this way, it’s hard to think strategically about what’s next for your career. 

You become more focused on escaping (or lamenting) your current situation than creating something truly great for your future. 

Here are the biggest mistakes I see people make when they reach this point: 

  • Taking drastic, immediate action without a plan (i.e., desperately applying to tons of jobs online)

  • Procrastinating - taking no action because the problem feels so overwhelming or unsolvable.  

  • Undervaluing their current skill set / thinking they don’t have what the market wants.  

  • Overly focusing on the perceived risk of making a change. 

  • Trying to write the “perfect’ resume, LinkedIn profile, or elevator pitch.

The problem is that operating this way only leads to more burnout, procrastination, overthinking, self-judgment. 

Rather than land a better opportunity, you’ll end up in the same situation, just more frustrated and exhausted.  

But here’s the good news. There is an easier, simpler way that will get you better results. 

You just need a multiplying action – one singular, low-lift action that will multiply your results.

If in doubt, here are 3 multiplying actions that will almost always move you forward: 

  1. Reclaim your time. Start saying “no” to things that drain you and “yes” to things that align with your values. Warning: This will feel uncomfortable if you’re used to over-extending and/or over-working. 

  2. Activate your network. Start having conversations and building relationships with people everywhere you go. Your next opportunity is 10x more likely to come from a relationship or connection than an online job posting or application. Make it a priority to connect with at least one person every week.  Use the conversations to get clear on what you want and practice your “elevator pitch.” Learn as you go, one conversation at a time. 

  3. Re-discover who you are. Most people don’t even realize that they’ve lost themselves. That they don’t even know who they are anymore. That their job has sucked the life out of them to the point that they are now a shell of who they used to be. You have to make it your mission to re-discover who you actually are. How do you want to spend your time? How do you expect to be treated?

The more you show up for yourself, the more others will show up for you. 

It’s so hard to connect with this idea when you’re operating inside of a dysfunctional environment or being treated poorly at work. 

But I promise you it is true. 

My husband always says, “hot news gets hotter, and cold news gets colder.” 

If you’re in a negative downward spiral, you’ve got to disrupt the spiral. 

And the best way to do this is to start treating yourself the way you deserve to be treated. 

Again - this is so much harder if you’ve been in a toxic environment. 

The more you do this, the more you will: 

  • Uncover opportunities 

  • Present yourself with confidence and ease 

  • Command top dollar 

  • Enjoy work and life
