Surviving the White Collar Recession
The White Collar Recession has seen waves of layoffs across all industries in 2023 and 2024 – with many organizations cutting significant portions of their workforce.
Now, the market is flooded with qualified candidates all vying for fewer jobs.
The increased competition – coupled with burnout and work fatigue – has made it harder than ever to get motivated and land opportunities. It’s becoming a form of career paralysis.
Here are a few things to stop doing in order to avoid this trap:
❌ Stop wasting your time scrolling job boards and applying to hundreds of jobs online.
❌ Stop hiding behind the computer screen and avoiding real-life human interactions.
❌ Stop waiting for more favorable market conditions to take action.
❌ Stop assuming that you don’t have the skills or background needed
You can absolutely stand out and land opportunities in this market, but it will require you to reinvent yourself.
If you thought that your career was going to be a linear, predictable path doing one job for the rest of your life, think again.
Reinvention is about deeply understanding the problems that organizations face today, and then positioning yourself as the solution to those problems — even if that requires you to completely pivot and/or learn to position yourself in new ways.
It’s about giving a damn – asking how you can be of service to others using your existing skill set.
This will require you to dig deep and reconnect with your value and purpose.
Not only that, you’ll need to learn how to communicate your value to folks in industries and functional areas that may be outside your comfort zone.
Decide that you are the answer to the White Collar Recession. Then figure out how it’s true.
Think about it. Every organization is facing similar challenges right now:
Economic uncertainty and inflation
Talent shortages and skills mismatch
AI integration and automation
Supply chain disruptions
Sustainability and ESG pressures
Figure out how the work you do contributes positively to solving one or several of these challenges.
Practice talking about it. Get interested in it. Again I say – give a damn!
The way you view and position yourself will be the deciding factor in which doors open.
I hear from professionals all the time that they don’t know how to position themselves this way – or that it feels inauthentic to who they are.
They’re afraid to ask for help or to activate their network.
They feel stupid putting themselves out there as “the solution” to anything.
They tell themselves that it’s because they don’t want to seem arrogant.
But it’s really because they aren’t truly connected to their value!
When you know your value, doors open.
That’s why I created VOYAGE – a FREE, 3 day career accelerator.
