How and why to change career paths in 2024
There are 6 months left in 2024.
For many of you, it’s probably time to make a career pivot.
Imagine starting a new job at the end of the summer – one where you’re making $200,000+ doing work that you love, working reasonable hours, and receiving the respect you deserve.
This might seem like a far-fetched idea – especially if you’ve been doing the same job for a while.
When you get used to a dysfunctional job, it starts to feel like that’s all there is out there.
You doubt whether good jobs even exist at all.
You can’t really imagine yourself switching jobs, let alone industries.
This is especially true if your current job is demanding of your time.
It can feel impossible to carve out enough time to search elsewhere.
You think you need all this extra time in order to make a career switch.
But once you finally do get time, you're so exhausted that the last thing you want to do is look for new opportunities.
It’s a vicious cycle.
But here’s the good news.
If you’re going to switch industries or jobs, you don’t need more time or a better network.
You just need the willingness to say “no” to your current job.
This means the willingness to feel whatever difficult emotions arise when you do.
Making a transition is more about your ability to manage challenging emotions than it is figuring out the steps to take.
This one concept can fundamentally change the trajectory of your career.
So I’m going to emphasize it again.
The thing you need is the willingness to deal with the discomfort of prioritizing yourself instead of your current job.
You need to start practicing this right away.
Here are the skills you’ll need:
Stopping your work when it reaches a B+ or A- level quality vs. going the extra mile to make it an A+
Finding professional ways to say “no” and/or delegate work to others
Focusing on relationships and how you’re perceived vs. doing a ton of work
Here’s what you’ll find when you do this.
Some people will get mad and feel let down by you. You might even get called out for not working enough.
So be prepared to receive that feedback.
But you might also find that people respond very positively.
They’ll say, “you seem so calm and collected.”
Or, “You were so composed in that meeting.”
Either way, you’re going to reclaim your time and your dignity.
And that’s going to free you to put yourself first + switch industries or jobs.
You’ll carry this positive energy with you into job interviews.
You’ll come across like a leader.
Hiring managers and people in your network will see you as a high level thinker / contributor
Better opportunities will come your way.
Then when you step into a new role making way better money, you’ll also be prepared to not let it take over your life.
It’s a virtuous cycle.
