Betting on yourself and winning

Working for yourself is incredible. It’s total freedom. 

But with that freedom comes a sense of fear – what if I can’t do this? 

What if this doesn’t work out? 

How long can I keep the lights on? 

Although it’s smart to plan ahead and protect yourself against future threats, I notice that a lot of independent professionals spend more time preparing for defeat than they do success. 

You’ll know this is you if

  • You’re constantly wondering where your next gig will come from 

  • You’re often thinking of contingency plans 

  • You’re nervous that it will all fall apart if one or two clients don’t renew

  • Your pipeline feels like an accident or like it’s out of your control  

  • You’re telling yourself that people don’t have money or don’t want to buy 

When you’re thinking like this, it’s harder to set financial goals and achieve them. It drains your energy. It also becomes a self fulfilling prophecy. 

You set small goals, so small goals are what you achieve. 

And it takes the EXACT same energy and effort as if you’d set a bigger goal. 

So you mistakenly start to believe that making great money and having consistent revenue will require you to work even harder. 

But in reality it just requires you to set your sights on a different destination and then align your action toward it. 

This all comes down to learning how to bet on yourself. 

My brain creates A LOT of drama when I set big goals: Is this the right goal? Do I even want this? Can I get it? Do I have what it takes? What happens if I fail?

But when I dial down the voice in my head, I can see that betting on myself is extremely straight forward. 

It’s 3 no-nonsense steps: 

  1. Set a big goal 

  2. Determine the plan to get there 

  3. Learn the skills needed to execute the steps 

That last part is so important! 

I used to think that only extremely special people could do extraordinary things. But It’s not about being special / unique 

It’s about the willingness to learn the skills required to get where you’re trying to go. 

This is great news because it means that growing your business is NEVER about your worthiness. It’s never about whether or not you “have what it takes.” 

There’s no requirement for you to be superhuman or extraordinary. 

But there is a requirement that you be willing to learn new skills. 

As adults, we forget how uncomfortable it is to learn new skills. 

Remember how scary it is to post your first video online talking about your business? 

Yeah it’s like that. But when you do, the payoff is massive:  

  • You become incredibly skilled.

  • You’re always relevant because you’re always learning 

  • You master the skill of selling yourself and your services 

  • You’ll learn that revenue is more in your control than it often feels. 

This is all learnable! And it’s worth your time to learn it, because it will keep you in business working for yourself, FOREVER.
