Each week we publish the best practices, latest thinking, and market trends to help you launch and sustain your independent business.
Working smarter not harder
It took me far too long in my career to learn one of the most vital lessons – that the hard work is already done.
We all dream of having more money, a fulfilling career, and the freedom to live life as we choose.
Whether it’s going for a promotion, asking for a pay raise, starting your own business, or switching jobs, there’s a tendency to use overworking and extreme effort to get ahead.
The power of thinking like an Olympian
In 2021 Simone Biles received critique for prioritizing her mental game over the physical. Guess what? She was right. Here’s why:
You can’t achieve greatness without mastering the mental game. This means:
Setting big goals, even when others say it’s not practical or possible
Working with the certainty that you’ll achieve them, even when you don’t know if you will
Being gentle with yourself whether you win or lose. Letting go and moving on to the next.
The real secret to landing a job
Networking is not about fake conversations or self-promotion. It’s the opposite. Here’s what you need to know.
How to get noticed by hiring managers
Networking is not about fake conversations or self-promotion. It’s the opposite. Here’s what you need to know.
Why your resume isn’t getting noticed
Tired of getting overlooked in the online job application process? You’re not alone, and here’s what you need to know.
The problem is that it’s nearly impossible to get your resume to stand out amongst the sea of other applicants.
You end up overlooked, even for roles you’re qualified for.
You submit tons of applications but hear nothing back.
And if you do happen to land an interview, it often doesn’t result in an offer.
Try this proven approach for skipping the line and getting noticed by decision makers who have authority to hire you now.
Small steps that lead to big results
Here are the biggest mistakes I see people make when trying to get a new job:
❎ Taking drastic, immediate action without a plan (i.e., desperately applying to tons of jobs online)
❎ Procrastinating - taking no action because the problem feels so overwhelming or unsolvable.
❎ Undervaluing their current skill set / thinking they don’t have what the market wants.
❎ Overly focusing on the perceived risk of making a change.
❎ Trying to write the “perfect’ resume, LinkedIn profile, or elevator pitch
The problem is that operating this way only leads to more burnout, procrastination, overthinking, self-judgment. You never get the actual results.
Should you leave your job without something lined up?
UNCONVENTIONAL OPINION ALERT: Sometimes it makes perfect sense to quit your job with nothing lined up because you’re basically saying to yourself and the world:
💪 “I know I’ve got my own back.”
💪 “I know what I’m worth.”
💪 “I’m willing to bet on myself.
💪 “I’m NOT willing to tolerate being treated poorly anymore.”
When you approach quitting with this mindset, it turns your choice into jet fuel for your career.
How to change careers in your 50s and 60s
My oldest client is 70. And a ton of my clients are in their 50s. I love working with later stage professionals. My experience is that they bring minimal drama to work every day. They come in, get the job done, and don’t complain.
I’ve supported these folks through making some pretty big career moves over the past 7 years. This week I showcase some of the best lessons learned from folks who’ve changed careers in their 50s and 60s.
If you’re thinking about making some shifts, this is the edition for you.
How and why to change career paths in 2024
If you’re going to switch industries or jobs, you don’t need more time or a better network.
You just need the willingness to say “no” to your current job.
This means the willingness to feel whatever difficult emotions arise when you do.
Making a transition is more about your ability to manage challenging emotions than it is figuring out the steps to take.
This one concept can fundamentally change the trajectory of your career.
The biggest trap to avoid when starting your own business
Ever thought about leaving your corporate job and starting your own business? It’s simpler than you think, but you have to avoid this common trap that I see people make all the time.
What’s a career strategy, and why you need one
Do you have a career strategy in place? Probably not. Most people don’t.
This week I explain exactly what a career strategy is, and why you need one.
It’s not as complicated as you think. In fact, it’s best to keep it simple for maximum results.

Why getting ahead requires us to look within ourselves
In the age of social media we’ve normalized this idea that everything can be boiled down to a 5-step “how to” checklist. But when it comes to fulfillment at work, it just doesn’t work that way.
